I LOVE CicLAvia. Truly one of my favorite events in LA, although seeing all those people out on bikes and -- as you noted, all those different *kinds* of people -- always made me wish the city took cycling more seriously in its planning.
I've loved it from afar for years now, and love it even more now being there firsthand!
It seems to me the city is starting to slowly creep toward valuing more alternative forms of transportation, but it has a giant pit to dig its way out of to be sure. "Planning" as a whole hasn't exactly been LA's M.O. when it comes to development for the last, oh I don't know, hundred years? But I'm glad events like CicLAvia are pulling back the curtain and showing that people do in fact have a desire for bicycling and walking when they are given safe, accessible places to do it.
